Heart stems from this: behind its often understated front there is a wild sense of humour and passion to be found and enjoyed in Finnish design. This exhibition dives into the depths of Finnish contemporary design and offers a look into both its present and future. The exhibition is divided into three stages and eleven designers have been selected to show some of their works, each embodying different aspects of Finnish design. The Wild Humour stage is all about colours and it invites visitors to explore the playful side of Finnish design; the blush coloured Social Impact stage focuses on how design can affect society; while at the Raw Beauty stage, material-driven design and art are the focal points. Although there are different themes in the exhibition, all of the creators have one thing in common: they move boldly at the intersection of art and design and work with wild hearts and open minds. The deep red colour of the lobby ceiling in Bio Rex inspired the artist to experiment with how this challenging hue, capable of evoking strong feelings, would react when brought into a completely different environment. Besides pigments, Kuitunen is also curious about form and material, moving freely across art and design. Even the slightest interference with familiar elements can lead us onto completely new paths. The font used in Bio Rex is a form that was chosen by someone in the 1930s. The exhibition was held at the Copper Smithy gallery in Fiskars, Finland. The “Jätetty Jälki / A Trace Left Behind” installation work explores the creator’s touch, the momentary event, and change. Finger impressions are left in the hand-formed clay, the clay hardens, and it is eventually fired into ceramics. The object preserves and makes visible its creator’s touch. The work is intended to leave a mark on the world. Fired ceramics will survive for thousands of years, and the fingerprint impressed into it will live on, acting as a reminder of its creator’s existence. The installation consists of seven ceramic objects and painted cast plaster. The names of the ceramic works refer to transitory moments and change. Darkness turns into light, a bud bursts into bloom, and even a stone is constantly changing.
